Street Renaming Ceremony- Fr. Vines
On September 12, Jesuit Fathers Suarez and Cartaya, alumni and Miami-Dade County Commissioner José "Pepe" Diaz, District 12 took part in a Street Renaming Ceremony. The signage unveiled on the corner of 6th St and 128th Ave a sign saying, “Fr. Benito Viñes Way.”
In 1870, Jesuit Father Benito Viñes became head of the Meteorological Observatory at el Colegio de Belen in Havana, Cuba. Beginning his significant and important research on hurricanes, he established an observation network across Cuba. It was at this observatory that the ‘Father of Hurricanes’ went on to predict hurricanes, helping to prepare Havana for the storm that hit the city on September 12, 1875.
“Fr. Viñes was so influential on modern tropical meteorology that, for a time, hurricanes were to be called “Viñesas,” instead of the naming system currently in place,” said Jesuit Father Pedro Cartaya, Director of the Fr. Benito Viñes, SJ Observatory. “I think the school has continued a great Jesuit tradition of science and education through the observatory.”
Continuing a tradition of over 140 years, the Fr. Benito Viñes, SJ Observatory is at the service of its students and the Miami community.
Belen Jesuit is one of the only schools in the United States equipped with a 16” telescope with a CCD camera for astrophotography and one of only a few schools in South Florida with an observatory. Weather forecasts are radioed daily to various cities in Florida. The observatory was made possible by donations from the Belen Jesuit Class of 1972.
The school includes a meteorology & astronomy club for both the middle school and high school. All students have access to a fully functional meteorology center that can be used to predict and analyze weather patterns throughout the globe.
